Trophy lists are a bit of a pain on PlayStation 5. When you view a game's Trophies on PS5, they're currently presented in a horizontal lineup, which matches other UI on the system, but isn't a particularly nice experience. The Trophy icon is nice and big, but its description is obscured because of the way the list is laid out. Reading a Trophy list right now is a faff, especially if you're trying to Platinum something. It seems Sony has seen sense at last, however: vertical Trophies are coming back.
Participants in PS5's firmware beta programme are currently privy to a bunch of exciting changes coming to the console in the near future, and one of the patch notes is Trophy lists being displayed vertically, like all good lists should be. Here's the official wording from Sony: "When viewing the trophy lists of games, the trophies will now be displayed vertically instead of horizontally. You'll now be able to see more information for each trophy without selecting it."
You can see it for yourself part way through the below clip:
This is a big change for Trophy hunters. On PS4, Trophies are shown vertically, but PS5 opted for a new style that made it harder to view the darn things. There's no word on when this firmware update will be released to everyone, but at least we know that Trophy lists will return to normal sometime soon.
It's not the only meaningful change in the beta firmware, either. Most notable is the ability to install extra SSD storage, and we also know the PS5's UI in general is getting many significant improvements across the board. There's plenty to look forward to, then. Are you relieved to know that Trophies will be displayed vertically once again? Form a vertical line in the comments section below.

Now watching earning trophies š increases by 9000% š
This is a good move and how it should be.
I appreciate there are many features people want with folders being right up there but I miss the news feed on the PS4, telling me what trophies my mates have captured not just what game they are playing so hopefully we get some form of this back.
the feature i would like the most is having themes back.
i know ps4 also didn't have those at launch so i hope theu will add them to ps5 later.
This is good. Also good that you can choose 5 trophies to pin. Slowly getting there. VRR would be nice, but I understand there are a tiny number of people this impacts so willing to wait on it.
Thank goodness for that, it's been a pain these past few months.
@velio84 it's weird actually, the PS5 has messages under game base and trophies on your avatar icon. Bit of a change and it's not organic when you are used to the PS4. You get used to it eventually.
Not sure if more Disney's issue rather than Sony, but I'd like a fix for the audio sync with Disney+ on the PS5!
Linear PCM through my surround sound is in sync, but just multi stereo on Disney+... Change the PS5 sound settings to "Dolby" (as most content on D+ is Dolby) and you get surround BUT the sync is ridiculously off!
Ended up switching to my PS4 to watch Black Widow as there's no issue on that console.
None of the other streaming apps (Netflix, AppleTV+, NowTV, Prime) seem to have this problem.
Oh and if Sony are able to do a firmware update of the Bluray drive to make 3D blurays compatible, that'd be nice
(Yes i know it's a dead medium! But for those who do have them and to watch in PSVR it would be a nice gesture)
Iām trying to come up with a Horizon: Zero Dawn pun. Feel free to beat me to it.
EDIT: Horizon(tal) Zero Platinums.
Iāām not on form today.
I liked the horizontal trophy list. The only annoyance I had was it took a Xbox one level of menus to get to the trophy list.
What a relief. The horizontal list was horrific. It would be nice if there was an option to display horizontally for those who preferred the new look however
In the end, I just want ps4-like ui with new themes and fast responsive ui for my ps5, ps5 features is still too barebones compared to ps4.
And I still want folder and themes.
@Vacuumator leeeel
The trophy list appearing vertical is nice .the other nice change is how they have now labeled the games from ps4 version of the game to ps5 and make it easier to choose which version to download. Not sure if I like the 3d audio out of the TV. It sounds kind of muddy but that could also be because tv speakers aren't generally very good to start with . Over all I'd say this is a pretty good update
Thank goodness. It was a terrible idea to ever go horizontal like that.
@jdv95 I agree. The full screen wallpaper ads on the Home screen look so visually uncomfortable because they are typically not at all designed to go with the interface. Be nice to go back to the clean themes like PS4.
That's it Sony - get all those weird bugs and missing features sorted before I can be arsed to look for a 5...
Blessed to the trophy gods. Our 8 month global nightmare is over.
Wonderful! Glad they're fixing this, makes so much more sense!
The thing I missed back when I owned a PS5 was the āWhatās Newā tab. I like seeing what my friends have been up to. I hope that gets added at some point.
and yet no mention of folders.. I have a feeling we're going to see a repeat of the PS4 with how long it took to implement them, but otherwise some good much needed changes.
Nice to see Sony is trying to improve it's 3D Audio features.
It's been nice to have it (and I love that applicable PS4 games played on PS5 no longer require the Platinum Headset to enabled 3D Audio), but a tad underwhelming compared to what I have been used to elsewhere - I think it's mostly been due to the confusing way to get it "right".
Having 5 water sounds playing all at once and you have to pick the one sound that sounds like it's at "ear level" is distracting - especially when a couple of those sounds are so close in "height" (at least for me). Choosing the wrong one can be the difference between properly perceiving height and not.
How many of you received an invitation for the beta?
I got nothing so far unfortunately
Themes and folders next please haha. Might sound harsh but I have a feeling PlayStation's OS development methodology does not scale well across generations which means they start from scratch. Xbox seems better imo at that. But yeah, not too fussed so long as the games keep coming.
@Reeneman
Whatās a a leeeel?
@Vacuumator laughing eeeeextremly loud

3D Sound for sound systems
Trophies are clumsy until you got down to your last few. Miss the option to search for trophy help on YouTube, not many games have the built in help. 3D audio without headphones might be ok unless it's only using the two front speakers š¤š
Forever hoping they let us have the option to sort our trophy list alphabetically. Man I miss that from the PS3 days
@Perryg92 And on the subject of Disney+, it would be nice to actually be able to watch movies in 4k on my 4k console through my 4k TV. But nope. The app doesn't support 4k on PS5. I have to go through my Smart TV, which is buggy. Infuriating.
That's good I'm sick of having to go online to compare trophies to a friend just to get a better view of trophy progression.
@Deadhunter apparently that's been fixed in a 3.01 update:
https://www.psu.com/news/disney-plus-3-01-patch-update-finally-brings-4k-to-ps4-ps5-users/
But I checked it yesterday and swear it's still 1080p on PS5!
And the HDR doesn't kick in on my 4K OLED or projector either!
Very frustrating.
Typical Sony then, fixing some of their poorer design choices with the UI but some will always remain, a la PS3 (scrolling lists of doom) and PS4 (generally sluggish) and they all have poorly arranged settings menus with illogical layouts.
Something else that's desperately needed is getting to the trophies quickly like on PS4, you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get to see your trophy list. Maybe holding down a button or double tapping the touch pad to show your trophies.
@Perryg92 Yeah, it absolutely wasn't fixed. Nothing is listed in 4k. I might try to reinstall the app, though I've got a feeling it won't change.
@Reeneman yeah those additional ones you mentioned would be great as well.
I want the PS4 trophy sound back also please. This new sound sounds like a serious downgrade. Like some water got into the speaker or something. Muffled and dull.
@Reeneman Not me either but I did just get one for the PS4..so yeh. If anyone wants the code for it let me know
"Platinum" as a verb. How far we've evolved.
YES!!!!
Shame they're not updating the profile page or adding some sort of activities page to show off trophies again.
I wish they would fix the way the main tiles for PS4/PS3 games. Their crammed inside of what looks like its meant to be the new PS5 tiles.
The trophies are definitely an area that could be improved, maybe one day we could have an actual trophy case with better trophies for platinum. (like a ratchet figurine for R&C) rather than just a tile and a bland trophy picture
I like the current themes on PS5, you get FREE theme's of the current game your playing along with music from that game.
As for the trophy list yeah I can scroll left-right just as easy as I can up-down.
Lastly the SSD upgrade, I will not be buying one until they hit $99 for 1Tb even if that is never.
I wish they allowed us to change the colour of the light when it is on. I would like blue when it's on standby and blue when it's on(yep to much blue I know) Don't like the orange and then white(I think it is) when it's on + for some reason the PS5 only can play my music on my USB stick up to a certain Letter which is odd??? The rest of the Albums(of music) are just missing. Very odd. It's like it can only see half of what's on my USB stick. Very odd that.
This is a wonderful improvement.
Two words....... Thank God!
The horizontal trophy lists are just weird
Very welcomed improvement, kudos to Sony.
